When preparing a diet plan for lions (Panthera leo) it is necessary to consider their specific dietary needs. Obesity amongst captive felids is largely prevalent (Altman, 2005; Vester, 2008), therefore understanding of the digestive system, metabolic rates and nutritional requirements is essential to ensure a well balanced diet is provided.
A feeding strategy should consider feeding behaviours of wild counterparts, as well as the underlying physiological needs of lions. Once a regime has been put in place, individuals should be continually monitored to ensure the diet is appropriate, with no adverse effects and that all lions are receiving appropriate nutritional intake.
